Myopia, or nearsightedness, develops when the eyeball is too long compared to the curve of the cornea. Because children’s eyes are still growing, their myopia tends to get worse as they get older.
Myopia control is a process that limits the progression of myopia. Children who undergo myopia control retain more of their clear distance vision as they reach adulthood than children who do not receive myopia control.
There are several methods of myopia control available today and they all function somewhat differently. However, numerous recent methods of myopia control rely on myopic defocus.
Recent research indicates that peripheral vision can influence eye growth. By altering the way light focuses on the periphery of a child’s vision, we can signal to the brain that the eye is long enough. The body responds by slowing the growth of the eye, limiting the progression of myopia.
Although many adults live with myopia, the condition does not tend to get worse after age 20, when the eyes usually finish growing. As a result, myopia control is not necessarily effective for adults.
Myopia control is most effective for children between the ages of 7 and 15. Most changes affecting the size and structure of the eye take place during these years.

This was my first eye evaluation and it could not have gone any smoother. Testing and results were thoroughly explained and I didn’t have any questions when I left the office. Office was brand new and the staff was very helpful and courteous. If you need an eye exam give them a call!
Dr. Kuc has been such a great help in assuring me that there are many treatment options for my dry eye! He has helped me feel confident that we will find the right treatment for me and has been thorough in explaining my options and taking the time to answer my questions. He is very good at explaining procedures to put me at ease. He has wonderful “bedside manner” and is one of the most personable and compassionate doctors I think I have ever been to.
