Main Causes of Dry Eyes

Many environmental factors can contribute to dry eyes, including modern heating and air conditioning systems that rely on forced air. Outside the home, air pollution and arid conditions can also contribute to dry eyes. Patients who live in dry climates often experience more severe dry eye symptoms due to the lack of humidity around them.

Inflammation on the ocular surface has been shown to be a root cause of dry eye. Inflammatory conditions such as rosacea and blepharitis have also been associated with dry eyes.

Hormones have a significant impact on tear production, which is why women who are mid- or post-menopause are more likely to experience dry eyes.

Your diet may also be exacerbating your dry eye symptoms. A nutritious diet rich in omega-3 fatty acids (from foods like salmon, rainbow trout, and light tuna) plus plenty of fruits and vegetables can help reduce inflammation, offering relief from your symptoms.

Too much screen time can also contribute to dry eyes, as our blink rate plummets when we use digital devices such as computers, tablets, and smartphones.

Personal Care Products

Many ingredients in the personal care products we use every day (including soaps, lotions, detergents, and especially makeup) can significantly increase dry eye signs and symptoms.

Types of Dry Eyes

There are actually two types of dry eyes: aqueous deficient dry eyes and evaporative dry eyes.

With aqueous deficient dry eyes, your eyes do not produce a high enough volume of tears to hydrate, lubricate, and protect your eyes effectively.

Evaporative dry eyes, on the other hand, are the most common type of dry eyes. Healthy tears contain oil called meibum, which prevents them from evaporating too quickly. If the glands that produce this oil are blocked or not working properly, your tears will evaporate faster than your body can produce them.

“Treating dry eye disease is about more than ensuring your comfort. It is about protecting the ocular surface and securing lasting optical health and clear, comfortable vision.”

Medical Optometry America Advanced Treatments

There are many treatment options for dry eye disease. Over-the-counter drops can work well for the earliest stages, providing helpful, temporary relief. For longer-lasting relief that protects and restores the surface of the eye, there are many different therapy and treatment options that are only available from a dry eye specialist. Medical Optometry America locations are equipped with the following testing and treatment technology:

  • Meibography: A quick and comfortable test that involves taking an image of the tear glands (meibomian glands) to assess whether or not a patient is producing healthy tears.
  • Point of Care Testing: Our practices are equipped with simple, painless tests which help to diagnose dry eyes in seconds. These include Tearlab and InflammaDry.
  • Lipiflow & TearCare: Thermal Pulsation systems provide a gentle massage to remove blockages from the meibomian glands.  This helps to restore proper production of oils that make up healthy tears.
  • Intense Pulsed Light (IPL): A groundbreaking treatment for dry eye disease which uses pulses of light to remove blockages in the meibomian glands.
  • ILUX directly targets blocked Meibomian glands through the application of light-based heat and compressions to help improve dry eye symptoms.
  • Amniotic Membrane: An innovative, new treatment for the most difficult cases of Dry Eye Disease.
  • Demodex Treatment: In some cases, Dry Eye disease is caused by Demodex mites which live within the eyelashes.  At Medical Optometry America, we are equipped with the tools necessary to treat this condition.
  • Scleral Lenses: A special type of lens used to treat chronic, severe dry eye disease by holding a therapeutic saline reservoir on the ocular surface
  • Nutritional Therapy: Medical Optometry America offices carry the #1 nutritional product on the market (Dry Eye Omega Benefits by PRN) to help support healthy tear function.
